Cowan gives thanks and praise

Longford Town striker Don Cowan has credited manager Tony Cousins and strike partner Austin Skelly for the way he has started the season. Cowan has been terrorising defences and on Saturday night he grabbed his second league goal of the season as the Town beat Waterford Utd 1-0.

Last season Cowan - who joined the Town on loan from Shamrock Rovers - failed to find the back of the net but showed enough promise for Cousins to make his loan move permanent. He has started this season very well and attributes that to strike partner Skelly and his boss. “I’m improving with each game. Tony is working with me. If I just keep listening to him I know I’ll do well. I’m also really enjoying playing with ‘Aussie’. He plays the ball in, knocks it over and just knows where I am. He’s a great player and very experienced. He talks to me all the time, which helps,” he told extratime.ie.

Although Cowan proved to be the hero for the Town with his sublime strike on Saturday night he was full of praise for the defence who were resolute throughout. He said, “Our defence played very well. Tony (Cousins) has been working on our defence and them stepping it up. The boys have good control back there, so we had faith in them. When the game went on and it was still 1-0, Waterford had a chance but the defence were brilliant.”

The win against the ‘Blues’ moved Tony Cousins’ charges up to 4th in the table and the younger striker is delighted with the start the Town have made to the season. “ Things have been going great. If we get a win against Finn Harps it’ll keep us up there. That’s where we want to be, up there near the top”.
