FINN Harps midfielder Tony Shields has been released by the Donegal club with manager Paul Hegarty confirming the news after a 2-0 mid-week defeat to Bohemians - a game in which Shields did not feature.

The Strabane man, a one-time Peterborough United conscript, has been shown the exit door by the manager, who told reporters after Tuesday’s game that the player was not a part of his plans for the remainder of the season.

It is understood that Shields did not re-appear for training following the mid-season break.

Earlier in the season, Shields had been given compassionate leave by the club following some personal problems and was relieved of the club captaincy, which he never managed to reclaim. “Tony Shields is gone and he will not play for this club again, certainly not while I am the manager here,” Hegarty said. “That is all I am saying on the matter as we are looking forward and not back.” Shields played 52 times for Harps (starting 51) and scored one goal. Last season he led Harps to promotion as club captain.
