Henderson rues individual errors
Individual mistakes was the answer given from Waterford United manager Stephen Henderson as he spoke after his side’s 2-1 defeat against Cork City last Friday night.
Goals from Greg O’Halloran and Shane Duggan cancelled out Paul Murphy’s free-kick to give the away side the first Munster Derby three points of the season.
“We switched off at two key times”, Henderson said. “Two midfielders scoring against you when we were aware their midfielders break into the box. People were given their jobs and they didn’t do them. Second half we were very good, we dominated it, we created a lot of chances but first half we were terrible.”
“The sin is letting that happen (conceding on half time). A few minutes from half-time, you regroup; you kick the ball into the stands, that’s what we should have done but we didn’t. Greg isn’t renowned for his goal scoring but we never closed him down.”
“We switched off for the two goals and that’s the biggest disappointment. We’ll learn from the mistakes tonight, we won’t kill anyone over that, but if it happens a second time then it becomes a problem.”
Henderson was disappointed with his side’s first half performance but was a lot happier with his side in the second half. “The players looked nervous in the first half; some of our decision making wasn’t what it could have been. There was a few things that didn’t go well for us, but 2nd half things did. We got the ball down, we passed it, we got our crosses into the box, we got bodies into the box but it was just one of those nights.”
“We worked hard on our shooting and our finishing during the week but there’s no blame attached to the players. There was a big crowd here tonight and it was important that we put on a show for them and I think we did that in the second half, not so much in the first half.”
Despite the defeat, the Blues boss was happy with the performance, with luck going against his side, but he believes that once his side gels together, then they will be fine. “Normally I’d be devastated after a match, but there’s no way your luck goes on like that for the season. Cork came down, got their three points, good luck to them. But I know I’ve a better team in there than them."
"There were two fifteen minute periods in the second half that we totally dominated, the cork team actually looked tired and they dropped off further and further. This is a big season, there’s loads of time. Cork are going to go on a bad run, whether this series, the next series or the third series, and when they’re on that we’ll be on our great run. We will be alright. Willie John [Kiely] has goals, young Mike Rafter too, we need to get him fit, and when he plays he will score goals. Paul Murphy will score goals, Keith Quinn will score goals and Conor Sinnott has already shown, there are goals in this team.”
“At the moment, it’s frustrating for everybody, but I’d just say to everyone not to worry, we’ll be grand.”
