Kelly's eye for goal saves Galway
On Friday night Sean Kelly scored the equalising goal for Galway United as they took a point
from their game with Drogheda and afterwards he spoke exclusively to extratime.ie
about the game.
Galway trailed at half time and weren’t looking likely to cause too many problems for their hosts at that point. “The first half we let ourselves down", said Kelly. "We didn’t perform at all to the way we can, we let Drogheda get on top and gave [them] a sloppy goal and it’s uphill from there. Sean (Connor), the gaffer, had a game plan but we didn’t really stick to it. We didn’t battle enough, we didn’t get it wide to the boys and we didn’t get the ball in the box enough. In the second half we did that, we got the ball to Karl (Moore) and (Brian) Cashy on the right and that’s where the goal came from, the equaliser”.
The introduction of substitute Eduardo Duci gave Galway a little more bite in the middle and freed Kelly to rove forward. “I like getting forward from midfield, Eduardo came on there and he sat. He put in a few tackles and that’s what we needed. We needed a few tackles going in and that gave me the chance to get in the box and try to get on the end of a few chances. It’s not all about me scoring goals it’s about trying to pick up points but I think we left the three points behind us here.”
The Tribesmen improved in the second half and felt aggrieved not to take three points especially after an 85th minute header from Stephen Walsh was ruled out for offside. “I think we were the better team, it was a sloppy goal, if we don’t give that goal away we go 1-0 up in the second half and its them chasing the game but unfortunately it’s the other way around.
I don’t think it (the disallowed goal) was offside, (Stephen) Walshy said he waited for the ball to be kicked, it got flicked on, the centre half lost him and it went on to him. That’s the bit of luck, the ball just didn’t drop for us tonight."
Galway will host in form Derry City next week and will be hoping that their performance is more akin to their second half here rather than their disappointing first.
