Scully under no Illusions: Looking ahead to Friday’s clash against Wexford Youths, Limerick boss Pat Scully is under no illusions regarding his opponents form thus far. Wexford Youths have played four times, conceding twelve goals and are the only side in the First Division to yet pick up a single point.

Limerick themselves lie in fifth place, yet are only two points behind leaders Shelbourne. The Blues impressed last weekend with a fantastic first half performance against the table toppers in Drumcondra, before picking a late, but deserved equaliser courtesy of Paudie Quinn. The youngster, who signed from Tralee Dynamo’s, was part of the youth setup at Fulham, making an appearance in the FA Youth Cup semi-final defeat to Aston Villa last season.

The introductions of John Frost and Corie Treacy have really solidified the Lims defence this year, and it would appear that an out of form Wexford attack would struggle to penetrate the Limerick back four. However, Scully remains realistic. “This game is a real banana skin for us. Wexford have not started the season as well as they would have liked and they will be looking for a positive result against us on Friday night. After last week’s good draw and performance against Shels, we have to keep winning our home games and I can really see the confidence and believe growing in the players with every performance.”

Limerick still remain somewhat restricted by injuries, however due to the strength and depth in Scully’s squad, the ex-Rovers boss can still field a strong starting eleven. Limerick goalkeeper Dave Ryan, who has been replaced in goal this year by his elder brother Barry, is still five to six weeks away whilst recovering from a broken foot. Garry Sheahan is the long term injury, suffering a broken leg in Limericks opening fixture away to Finn Harps. Young midfielder Thomas Lyons is also sidelined, strained ankle ligaments his ailment.

Limerick will look to climb up the table this week, going into their game against former-Limerick boss Noel O’Connor’s Youths as firm favourites, whilst Cork and Waterford compete in a Munster Derby at the RSC. Monaghan face a tricky tie against a much improved, Keith Gillespie aided Longford Town at Gortakeegan and last weeks opponents Shelbourne travel to Athlone to face another ex-Limerick boss, Mike Kerley.
