Gillespie focused on Longford success

At the age of 36 former Manchester United winger Keith Gillespie still has a hunger for football and is delighted to be back plying his trade.

Gillespie made his debut for Longford Town on Saturday night in their 2-0 win over Athlone Town at Flancare Park. Speaking to ExtraTime.ie after the game he was delighted with how his debut went for his new club. He said, “I really enjoyed it. It was nice to get off to a winning start as well. It’s just nice to get back on to the pitch as well. To be fair I didn’t want it to end actually because I was really enjoying it out there. The main thing is we got three points and it’s nice to be sitting second now.”

The winger hasn’t played football since he left Darlington at the end of December and was glad to get on the field. He came on for goalscorer Austin Skelly in the 58th minute and he felt it was enough time for him. “That’s what I wanted. It has been a while since I played. Half an hour was good time for me. The more games I get, the fitter I’ll get. We’ll see how it goes in the coming weeks,” Gillespie said.

Gillespie only met his new team-mates the week before the Athlone game and is looking forward to getting to know them better as the weeks and games progress. He said, “It’s all about getting to know them and getting to know their game. I’m looking forward to getting to know them over the course of the season. Fingers crossed we can have a successful one. I’m looking forward to joining in the banter as well. They are a good set of lads.”

Longford Town have a young squad but they are eager to learn. The former Northern Ireland International hopes he can help bring on some of the younger players. He said, “Tony spoke to me about that. I’ve been about for quite a while now and have a lot of experience. It’s important that there are times that I can pass on information to the younger lads and hopefully they can take it on board as well.”

Although it’s only the start of his Longford Town career Gillespie believes the team can do well this season. He’s up for the challenge and fully committed to the Town’s cause. “The main thing for me is concentrating on the team and hopefully we can have a successful season. To be fair I haven’t seen much of the opposition in the division but I think we can do well,” Gillespie said.
