Harps launch online radio service

Finn Harps has really stepped into the 21st century as a small group of intrepid fans have launched Finn Harps Radio - an online radio station that should prove a God-send for exiled club supporters.

The radio station has been set-up by Rodney Dullaghan, the webmaster of the official Harps website www.finnharps.com. “Someone very kindly got me fantastic software for this and I have it set-up locally with it then plugged it through Ustream to broadcast over the net,” explained Rodney, a life-long Harps fan.

Harps have played two home games so far this season and the station has been ‘live’ for the 2-2 draws with Limerick and Monaghan United. On matchday one, some technical hitches were found, but the Monaghan game saw Rodney and Daithi Ramsay, the well-known local DJ who is also a big Harps fan, provide commentary for the exiled fans across the net.

Daithi was joined in the commentary box for the Limerick game by Aidan McNelis. During commentary from games, it is planned that Aidan - from Buncrana but now based in Galway - will come in with updates on other games on matchnights.

“The way this is setup, is that if you have a headset (the type used for Skype) or a microphone on your computer, I can let you talk on the live stream. With this in mind, we'd love to also get a midweek 'phone-in' going,” said Rodney, who has said that the possibility of a Wednesday night talkshow including interviews was a very real one this season.

“Also, if you own a smartphone, there are apps available for Apple, Android and Windows 7 phones, so you should be able to listen and contribute from anywhere in the world, with your phone.”

Where possible, providing broadband is available, it is hoped that they will be able to provide away game commentary with Aidan and Bartley Ramsay, the club’s noted historian, joining them for the away games.

Rodney, a former club director who is based in Ballybofey, has said that the shows can be put together as a podcast and made available for downloading onto iPods. As yet, the mid-week show has to get off the ground, but with two commentaries now behind them the team hope in the near future to make interviews and news items available, with contributions invited from fans.

Rodney added: “The main thing is that this is all meant to be a bit of fun and to also get exiles involved. The whole things is going to be 'By the fans, for the fans' and we'll be looking for as many to get involved in it as possible. Hopefully it all comes together. We've put a good bit of work into it so far.”
