Salmon devastated with manner of loss

To lose a game deep into injury-time is tough but when the winning goal is clearly offside then it’s really hard to take.

That’s what the Longford Town players had to contend with on Monday night when they lost 3-2 to UCD in the first round of the EA Sports Cup. Town had come back from 2-0 down to equalise in the 90th minute but UCD grabbed their winning goal two minutes later.

Town midfielder Mark Salmon was disappointed after the game with the way things had gone against his side. “It was devastating the way it happened. From what I seen he was a good bit offside. To lose a goal like that so late at the end after working hard was tough. At the same time we weren’t great in the first-half, it’s very hard to give a Premier Division side a two goal head start at half-time. To get back into it, we did very well. To lose a goal at the end like that, it seems to be every week that we are getting a bad decision against us,” he told ExtraTime.ie.

There does seem to be a trend of late with decisions that have gone against the Town. Salmon admitted he doesn’t mind losing but it’s the manner in which it happened. He said, “If the team you are playing against is better on the day then you can hold your hand up and say we were outplayed but there seems to be an awful lot of times now we’re getting wrong decisions against us; whether we’re not getting them or they are going against us. It’s tough to take.”

It was definitely a Jekyll and Hyde performance from the Town. They were dire in the first half but a different proposition after the break. Salmon said that the players knew they had to put in a performance in the second half. “We knew ourselves at half-time that we weren’t good enough in the first half. We knew from the whistle that we had to go and get ourselves going; we are a footballing team and we needed to move the ball better. In the second half we played very well. We can’t though turn it around at half-time when we are 2-0 down; that was disappointing. The way we played in the second half shows that it’s a good positive to take into the rest of the season,” the midfielder said.

The Town have to put Monday night’s result behind them as they prepare for Saturday’s game against local rivals Athlone Town. Salmon, an ex Athlone player, is looking forward to the game. He said, “I’m looking forward to it, especially as it’s a derby game, there is always that little extra bit. After beating them in the EA Sports Cup they are going to want to do well. They got a good result last week and it’ll be a tough game for us. If we play like we did in the second half we’re a match for anyone in this division.”
