Giovanni Trapattoni has handed the captain’s armband to Stephen Kelly ahead of Tuesday night’s friendly against Uruguay at the Aviva Stadium.

Kelly will play at centre back next to Darren O’Dea in a much changed line-up to the one that defeated Macedonia 2-1 in unconvincing fashion on Saturday night.

Keiren Westwood will start in goal, while Kevin Foley and Aston Villa youngster Ciarán Clarke will both play at full-back.

Trap has been forced into playing a completely different quartet midfield to Saturday night, with Liam Lawrence and Andy Keogh set to play on the flanks, as Paul Green and Keith Fahey are set to play in the centre, with the latter adding some much needed creativity in the centre.

Up front James McCarthy will make his first start, playing off the shoulder of Shane Long, completing a youthful line-up after most of the senior names had been released from the squad on Sunday.

Republic of Ireland XI to face Uruguay (4-4-1-1): Westwood; Foley, O’Dea, Kelly, Clarke; Lawrence, Green, Fahey, Keogh; McCarthy; Long.
