Away performance pleases Cousins

Longford Town manager Tony Cousins was pleased with his team’s performance against Limerick on Friday night, but disappointed with the result.

The Town slipped to their second league defeat of the season when they lost 1-0 in Jackman Park. Although happy with his side’s display, the Town boss was furious with the goal they conceded. “I thought it was a good away performance. There was nothing in the game and the goal was absolutely horrific to give away. From what you work on you can’t concede from a ball straight down the middle and two fellas fell asleep and didn’t do their jobs. That’s what has cost us a point. It was a good performance. I couldn’t go ranting and raving saying it wasn’t a good performance,” he told extratime.ie.

Last season on numerous occasions, mistakes cost Town goals. Cousins hoped his side could eradicate those problems this season. It’s only early days and he believes his side will learn from their mistakes. He said, “Lack of concentration cost us the goal. It’s only our fourth league game and we have to learn from it. If against the big sides we perform like that away from home then we’ll get more points than we’ll lose. We have to make sure we don’t make silly errors.”

Friday night’s performance and the one against Shelbourne in the opening game of the season have given Cousins confidence about his side’s chances for the season ahead. “We feel that we are good enough to be challenging. The way it is it’s these games that you have to get something out of. We didn’t do that. The only thing is, there is nothing really in it. Even against Shels we made mistakes in that game; we are not a million miles away,” he said.

Keith Gillespie may be the player on everyone’s lips at the moment but another signing made his long awaited debut on Friday night for the Town; Austin Skelly. The former Athlone man had been out since picking up an Achilles injury in a pre-season game against UCD. He looked eager when he came on. The Town boss was delighted with Skelly’s performance. “What Aussie does give you is that he gives you a presence in the air and he will hold the ball up. It was good to get him on. He did really well. He is a quality player,” said Cousins.
