Dundalk -v- Glentoran

Dundalk face up to Glentoran in the Setanta Cup quarter final second leg carrying a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Belfast thanks to a Mark Quigley strike.

This season is Dundalks debut season in this cup and so far they have performed admirably reflecting Ian Fosters determination not to take this competition lightly despite the early season fixture overload that it has brought.

Coming hard on the heels of their hard fought goalless draw with Bohemians on Friday evening it would be understandable if Dundalk tried to rest a player or two but due to absentees they will have no option but to play their strongest possible team. They will be missing Michael Hector and Dean Bennett due to suspensions carried over from offences committed last season. Eoghan Osborne will also miss the game with a hamstring strain so Dundalk are down to bare bones defensively. They will however be glad to see Ross Gaynor and Greg Bolger return and be available for selection.

Ian Foster gave his thoughts on the tie to the club website “I don’t think there will be any surprises when Glentoran come here. Whether they come here 4-3-3, which is the way they line up in the league and their own cup, or whether they play 4-4-2, like they did against us in the first leg, we know their personnel and we know that they’re a good side, and we know that 1-0 is a very slim advantage.”

Dundalk lead the tie thanks to Mark Quigley’s magnificent late strike at The Oval, but Foster is intent on going to win the second leg. “I don’t think that’s what we’re about,” he said when asked if he would shut up shop. “Like the Linfield game, we’ll play on the front foot and go and try to score the first goal. You could see that that took the wind out of Linfield’s sails when we did, and if we can get the first goal against Glentoran it will make their job that much more difficult.”

Glentoran travel in great form having suffered just 2 defeats in their last 12 games, with those losses coming to Dundalk and away at Crusaders. They have failed to score just 4 times in their last 23 outings and will pose a threat to the Dundalk rear guard where Andrew Waterworth has scored 8 goals in the last 10 games. Matty Burrows and Daryl Fordyce have scored 36 goals between them in all competitions this season so Dundalk will be hard pressed to keep them under control.

Those of you with an eye to YouTube may well remember Matty Burrows sensational backheeled volley from 15 yards against Portadown, if you haven’t seen it make sure you do. Scott Young has no problems with absentees and will be determined to overturn their narrow defeat in the last leg.
