Kenny disappointed with 'naive' Derry
Derry City manager Stephen Kenny spoke exclusively to extratime.ie in
the aftermath of his teams draw with Drogheda United. The Candystripes
were two goals to the good but let their lead slip in a couple of
second half minutes and Stephen was none too impressed with the way
his team had performed in this period.
“We scored two good goals, Eamon Zayed got off the mark and a great finish from Gareth McGlynn. To concede the two goals the way we did was poor to say the least, the first goal (a Colin O’Brien strike from around 22 yards), often in this ground you often get goals from distance I find. It’s a tight pitch and you often get goals from distance so there is always the concern that you are never comfortable.”
“Colin O’Brien scored that goal and we showed our naivety somewhat, we tipped off and rather than playing it forward we played it back to our own centre back then back to our goalkeeper, kicked it up in the air and then we found a penalty against us within a minute. So it was poor, poor decision making really.”
Derry went in at half time 1-0 up and with more clinical finishing could have had four goals in the that half. This only emphasised the chance missed for Stephen “We hit the bar we had a few good chances it’s definitely two points dropped but to be fair to Drogheda they were willing to battle for 90 minutes and they were going to give it everything and we knew that but we paid the price.”
Shamrock Rovers next for Derry and they will be hoping that their play is more decisive at both ends of the park to see off the threat from the reigning champions.
