Cooke delighted with Drogs comeback

Drogheda United manager Mick Cooke spoke exclusively to extratime.ie after his charges picked up their first point of the season and was delighted with the way his players came back from a 2-0 deficit.

“Going two down the players could have buckled very easy but I thought they showed great character and commitment and added to what we’ve been working on the last couple of weeks. We changed the system slightly from the first two games where we played 4-5-1, I thought tonight called for more 4-4-2. David Freeman and Dinny Corcoran up front worked very hard and in the midfield the two boys in the middle Mark O’Brien and John Lester were excellent but over all I thought the whole team performance was very good.”

Young midfielder Colin O’Brien turned in a man of the match performance from his slot on the right side of midfield and Mick sang his praises “Colly O’Brien came on at Dalymount last week and showed me what he could do so that’s why I threw him in tonight. I think he was a thorn in their side for the whole night. He’s only a young boy but he has a chance of making it he has bundles of energy and great ability.”

In the recent past a Drogs team would have wilted after going two goals down but showed great character in coming back Mick feels that their attitude has changed for the better “This is the big thing from when I came in, doctors differ patients die, my outlook to things and the way Bobby Browne had his way of wanting to do his work, I want to do things differently. Robbie Horgan and Brendan Kennedy are in the backroom staff and we’re working very, very hard and we need to be extremely fit to play the way that I want them to play.”

Despite Micks statement that fitness will be key his team will not be route one orientated “I firmly believe in what I’m trying to do and we are trying to play football. I think we’ve proved in the first three games that we do get it down and play it around regardless of the results. I’m really looking forward to going to the Showgrounds next week playing against Sligo Rovers. I was there last season twice (with Monaghan United) in the cups and Sligo play lovely football so hopefully we can match it. We play good open football and after the way we played there tonight the lads will go there full of confidence.”

So a tough game awaits but one that Drogheda can now face with more confidence.
