O'Connor bemoans poor league start

Wexford Youths manager Noel O’Connor must feel like it is Groundhog Day with another disappointing start to the season. But if this year’s league campaign can turn out as well as recent ones he’ll be happy.

On Friday night Youths lost their second game of the season against Longford Town. O’Connor was disappointed with the result but knew Town were going to be hard beaten. “It’s a disappointing result. I saw Longford in their previous game against Shelbourne and knew they were going to be a handful. They were unlucky not to get something out of the game. It was a moment of brilliance out of David Cassidy to get the three points for Shels,” he told extratime.ie.

Having lost their opening game of the season away to Cork the previous week O’Connor was hopeful that his side would put in a decent performance in front of their home supporters. He admitted that for some strange reason his side can’t make a decent start to the season. “Unfortunately for some reason we can’t seem to buy a win the first couple of games of every season. Some games you win, some you lose. You have to take it on the chin and move on,” O’Connor said.

Despite being outplayed in the first half, Youths had the best chances of a drab opening period with the wind playing its part. O’Connor knew that when they didn’t take their chances the Town would punish them. He said, “I knew the wind had a big factor on the game. We did defend well in the first half because we were under the cosh for long periods. We had chances but didn’t take them. I think the way the goals came they came at good times for Longford.”

Last season Wexford Youths exceeded everyone’s expectations by finishing 7th in the First Division. They have lost a number of last season’s squad and O’Connor knows it will be tough to repeat that position. For him he wants them to be competitive in every game they play in. He said, “I want people to see what we have down here. We still have a very young team. There is a great underage structure here and Mick (Wallace) does a brilliant job with them. Hopefully we will be competitive as ever in the First Division.”
