Brady happy with first win

Longford Town’s Cathal Brady had every reason to be happy on Friday night when he trudged off the pitch at Ferrycarrig Park. The Town had just picked up their first win of the season courtesy of a 2-0 win over Wexford Youths with Brady putting in a man of the match display.

The nifty winger played his part in both goals but he was happy with his contribution. “Instead of getting goals I’m happy with getting assists,” he told extratime.ie. “My job is to get the ball into the box and let Don (Cowan) do his stuff. I’m happy with that.” Though he was quick to add, “I don’t mind getting the odd goal, the odd time.”

Jacques Morley opened the scoring for the Town in the 51st minute with Don Cowan doubling their advantage in the 72nd minute. It was first goals for the club for both players. Brady was delighted for his team-mates. He said, “It’s good to see Jacques (Morley) get a goal too. He has done very well. He is a good lad so I was delighted to see him score. Don too, nice for him to get off the mark. He’ll trouble most defenders and if we can get him getting a good few goals we’ll do well.”

After losing their opening game to Shelbourne, the Town wanted to get something out of the trip to the South East. Brady admitted they took heart out of the performance against Shels and were able to bring that into the Wexford game. “We took a lot from the Shels game and moved on for Wexford and got the result. It’s important to get the first win early, you don’t want to get into a rut. It’s hard to come down here but I think the pitch suited us; we got the ball down, knocked it about and done well,” he said.

Brady is hoping that the Town can now push on from this result. The aim for the club is to improve on last year’s 9th place finish. “When Tony (Cousins) talked to us all in the off season his plans were to build on last year. Last year wasn’t good enough and we all want to push on now. That’s why we are here,” said the Town winger.
