Glynn's delight at derby win
Despite having had to watch his Mervue United side's 2-1 derby win over city rivals, Salthill Devon, on Saturday night from a lonely spot in the surrounds of Drom due to his four match ban carried forward from the 2009 season, Johnny Glynn, declared himself very happy to have collected all three points and on having made a winning start.
"I always said that there would only be a kick of a ball between the two sides and that proved to be the case in Drom on Saturday night,” Glynn said after the game. “We took our chances on the night but then lost our concentration for periods and got a bit nervy after conceding, having gone 2-0 up. In fairness to Salthill they came back at us after going two down but we defended well after conceding. We are delighted with the win and to start on a winning note is great especially in a derby game. It's only the first game of the season so improvement is the objective now and we still have three or four players to come into the squad.”
Ahead of Friday night's historic first game for the club at their home ground in Fahy's Field against Cork City, Glynn added: "The winning start sets us up nicely for a very big night for the club at Fahy's Field on Friday and we are looking forward to hopefully a big crowd behind us on the night against a Cork City side who also got their campaign off to a winning start against Wexford. The club's board, members and employee's have put a lot of hard work into getting the ground up to licensing standard so it would be nice to get a good result on Friday night but Cork have always proved tough opposition for us.
"We have a number of injuries ahead of the game as captain Damien O'Rourke, Mark Ludden, John Mountney and Eoin Martin are all still struggling having missed the win over Salthill, while we also have five players involved in colleges semi-finals and finals in mid-week as Kevin Crehan, Rory Gaffney, Tom King, Mike Elwood and Peter Dravins are all due to play for GMIT.”
With both the other Galway sides, Galway United and Salthill Devon, away this weekend all roads should lead to Fahy's Field for live Airtricity League soccer for fans from all three clubs. The club is promoting the game extensively as they try to improve attendances this season, now they are back in their own home ground on the east side of the city, while it is serviced by no less than four city bus services passing by their Mervue base. Therefore, fans have no excuse to watch live soccer and be part of LoI history as another new ground hosts top level football.
