Cowan reflects on Longford's loss

You have got to admire the honesty of Longford Town striker Don Cowan. On Saturday night Cowan was credited for scoring his side’s goal in their 2-1 defeat over Shelbourne after there was some confusion about who got the final touch.

Although he joked about wanting to claim the goal after the game he admitted that it wasn’t him that got that vital touch. “I actually didn’t see who got the final touch. I think it was Lee Roche. I didn’t touch it. I’d take the goal though if you want to give it to me. Only joking, it’s Lee’s, not mine,” he told extratime.ie.

It was clarified after the game that Roche did indeed get the goal that opened the scoring in the 5th minute. Shels though were back on level terms just before the break and got their winner 12 minutes from time. Cowan was disappointed that Town gifted Shels their goals. He said, “The first half I thought we were all over them to be honest. It was two mistakes that cost us the game. We didn’t deserve to lose it. I think we have a very good squad here for this season and we have a good chance to push on now.”

Shels were lucky not to have found themselves reduced to 10 men in the 19th minute when goalkeeper Dean Delaney fouled Cowan on the edge of the box; as last man he should’ve been shown a red card. The striker wasn’t impressed with what happened. ”To be honest I kind of lost the track of the ball but I was still going to get it and he just clattered into me. I think it should have been a free-kick and he should’ve been sent off. I could’ve got back on the ball and put it into an empty net,” said Cowan.

Although they lost the game Cowan felt there were plenty of positives to take out of the performance. He said, “There are a lot of positives to take out of the game. As a team this season we are all buzzing. We are playing to our strengths. Tony (Cousins) has got some really good players in. The formation we play 4-3-3 means we are good going forward, that’s what we are trying to do.

Cowan made his loan move from Shamrock Rovers permanent in the close season and has set himself a target for the season. He is delighted with how things are going for him at Longford Town. “I’m really enjoying it here. I’m enjoying my football. Last season I didn’t get any goals but this season I’ve set myself a target of 10 and push on from that,” said the striker.
