Mervue United

Major Honours: O
Stadium: Fahy’s Field
Manager: Johnny Glynn
Captain: TBA
Transfers In: Jason Molloy (Galway United) Peter Dravins (Castlebar Celtic) Darren Kelly (Dynamo Blues) Tom King (Galway United)
Transfers Out: Enda Curran (Galway United)
A vital victory over Monaghan United secured Mervue United’s First Division status in last seasons dramatic relegation battle, much to the relief of then manager Tom French and his squad. It was always going to be a tough battle for the Galway outfit to stay in the league and they did so with a final tally of 19 points in the league. The side had worrying defensive problems, conceding 84 goals throughout the year. United also needed more goals, notching up just 35 in 33 First Division encounters.
Boss Johnny Glynn, reappointed to the job in November 2010, appears to have done relatively well with his preseason spending, not just in terms of new additions to the squad but also in retaining the important members from last year. Rory Gaffney was top scorer last year and he will welcome the return of former United underage striker Jason Molloy to the club.
This year will be a difficult battle for the side which finished second from bottom last season, in what is shaping up to be a very competitive division. Winning four of their five victories at home last year, they will need to improve on the road as well as ensuring any visiting clubs will find it tough to come away from Fahy’s field with anything more than a draw.
Extratime Prediction: 10th
