Scully pleased by Limerick's latest win

Word from the dressing room at the Carlisle Grounds on Friday night was that Pat Devlin was not a happy man, which was understandable. He had just watched his Bray Wanderers side tumble to a 4-0 defeat against a Limerick FC side that will be playing a division lower than them in the 2011 Airtricity League.

But to be fair to a young Bray side that finished 2010 with something of a flourish, this Limerick side are not your average First Division journeymen. They look solid at the back, fiercely competitive in midfield and ruthlessly efficient up front.

The Limerick dressing room, on the other hand, was bouncing. They had just won their sixth successive pre-season game, adding four more goals to a tally that now stands at twenty, and the exuberant voices of a satisfied football team followed manager Pat Scully as he stepped out into the night air to share his thoughts with Extratime. Was he happy with his side’s performance?

“The second half, definitely”, said Scully. “I thought the penalty swung it our way. But definitely, the attitude and fitness levels were great and I thought in the second half we played fantastic. The discipline was good, the shape was good and we caught them on the break quite well, so it was a good night”.

Scully was quick to acknowledge that with Stephen O’Flynn, Gary Sheahan and Peter Hynes up front, he has a formidable attack at his disposal. “We’ve got some really talented players going forward. It’s good when you can bring the likes of Garvan Coughlan and Shane Tracey on, we’ve got really good options. At the moment, the hardest thing is going to be picking the team, but that’s the way you want it. It’s difficult because everyone is playing so well”.

But Scully recognises that pre-season can be something of a phoney war. He is already looking forward to next weekend when the real business of the league begins with a trip to Finn Harps. “Look, the pre-season has gone really well but it’s over and done now and the most important thing is that we get a positive start in the league next week.”

Going on their form so far, an exuberant dressing room might be something that Scully will have to get used to.
