Browne resigns Drogheda post

Just when it seemed as if the League's close season difficulties had settled down there was further bad news on Saturday morning when Drogheda United announced that manager Booby Browne had resigned his post.

Club Director, Jim Agnew, said "Following lengthy discussions about the structure of the club both on and off the pitch, Bobby has offered his resignation which the Board of Management has accepted. He is one of Irish football's gentlemen and his commitment and effort whilst manager with Drogheda United is very much appreciated. We wish him well for the future”.

Drogheda's financial troubles have been well documented over the past few months with the club's existence resting on a club share scheme that aimed to raise €200,000. Something in the region of half this amount was eventually raised although Drogheda's prospects were given a boost when their relegation to the First Division was overturned in the wake of Sporting Fingal's demise.

A lack of time and money have hampered Browne's attempts to put a squad together in time for the new season and, with the quality of Drogheda's player roster necessarily compromised, a difficult season loomed for the Louth club.

Drogheda were beaten 4-1 by Limerick FC in a pre-season friendly last Sunday, followed by a defeat against Wexford Youths in a Leinster Senior Cup tie on Friday night.

Drogheda United expects to be in a position to announce its new management team tomorrow which would give the new incumbents less than a week to prepare for the club's opening league game against UCD which will take place at Hunky Dorys Park next Friday night.
