The Football Association of Ireland this evening (February 21) confirmed that Limerick FC have been awarded a First Division Licence, having met the requirements sought by the Independent Club Licensing Committee regarding the club’s financial commitments for the coming season.

With Drogheda United gaining promotion to the Premier Division due to the demise of Sporting Fingal, Limerick’s successful licence application makes them the 11th team in the First Division.

A short Limerick statement read:
Limerick FC wish to confirm that today, Monday February 21st, the club has been awarded a Licence to compete in this year’s Airtricity League First Division by the FAI Independent Licensing Commission. The club will continue their build up to the new season with a Pre- Season Friendly away to Bray Wanderers next Friday night Feb 25th KO 7.45pm. All involved in the Club now look forward to the publication of the revised fixtures list and the start of the football season.

Despite their licencing issues, Limerick have been performing very well in preseason, remaining unbeaten so far with five wins from five. For a breakdown of those preseason wins, see Limerick’s 2011 Friendly results
