Dunne pleased with Munster cup workout
After seeing his Cork City side knock cup holders Waterford United out of the Munster Senior Cup on Sunday, manager Tommy Dunne spoke to Extratime about his sides performance and their preparation for the new season.
Although happy with the win, Dunne admitted that the workout his players got was of more importance. “What we were looking for was a really good workout and I think we got that, I’m very happy from that aspect”, Dunne said. “From the result side of it, I’m happy too because I want to win matches regardless of when or the stage of the year we’re in, it’s a good habit to get into. We created some really good chances in the first half and when we needed to defend in the second half we done it.”
The City boss was quick to lay praise on strike partners Graham Cummins and Vinny Sullivan as both grabbed goals against their former club.
“The first goal was a well worked goal and a good finish from Graham [Cummins]. For the second goal Vinny [Sullivan] caught out the midfielder and finished it fantastically. I thought it was a very entertaining game considering the pitch was so poor but overall it was a good work out.”
“I was quite impressed with Waterford too”, Dunne added. “I thought they played some really good football and played quite well. It’s no secret that they’ll be there or there abouts come the end of the season.”
Dunne described City’s pre-season preparations as “just okay” however, adding “we’re trying all the time to get people right, fit and healthy. We’ve a few bodies out but we’re getting there, come the start of the season we should be a little better.”
One of the main talking points of the game arrived eight minutes from the end as referee Jimmy McGrath initially awarded a goal to Waterford United, but changed his mind as the home team celebrated, and awarded a free kick to City.
“It’s hard to say”, Dunne said when questioned about the decision. “I originally thought it was for a high boot on Mark [McNulty] but when it ended up in the back of the net someone said that the referee mentioned a tug on the keeper, but I couldn’t see that. It’s difficult for them [officials]. They are normally doing amateur games which wouldn’t be as quick, but I thought he [referee] done well overall in the game.”
