Waterford United 1 – 2 Cork City
Cork City knocked holders Waterford United out of the Munster Senior Cup on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory in the RSC.
A Paul Murphy penalty couldn’t cancel out goals from ex-Blues strike pair Graham Cummins and Vinny Sullivan in an entertaining first period of play. The second half was a dour affair but City will be happy to progress to the semi-final of the competition.
Waterford United were first to threaten after just two minutes but Keith Quinn’s 20-yard strike went narrowly wide. The opening goal arrived after seven minutes. Davin O’Neill beat Paul Carey down the left wing and his low cross was turned into the net by striker Graham Cummins at the back post from two yards.
Fourteen minutes into the game Keith Quinn had another chance but his scuffed strike was easily saved by Mark McNulty. Gearoid Morrissey’s back post cross found Cummins but his header was deflected just wide by defender Seamus Long.
Two goals in two minutes then followed. Vinny Sullivan, returning to the RSC after a pre-season move to Cork City, doubled Cork City's lead with a 35-yard strike that sailed over the stranded Kevin Burns and into the goal.
Straight down the other end from the kick-off and Michael Coady was taken down by Neal Horgan. Paul Murphy stepped up and sent Mark McNulty the wrong way to half the deficit.
Kevin Burns then made a smart save from O’Neill but the retreating Seamus Long almost put it into his own net but for David Breen to clear off the line. Dwayne Wilson began to use his pace a little more and beat Horgan down the left but his cross was cleared by Spillane. Shane Duggan then fired just over the bar before Burns saved from Cummins.
Keith Quinn crossed from the left but the clearance only reached the edge of the penalty area and Mark McNulty pulled off an outstanding save from Gary Dunphy's powerful drive from the edge of the box. Moments later Quinn was involved again as he played in Coady down the left but his cross went across the six yard box untouched and found Wilson at the back post. He fired the ball back inside but Spillane cleared wide for a corner.
The main talking point of the match arrived seven minutes from time. Kenny Browne’s looping heading was caught on the goal line by Mark McNulty but the keeper fell backward toward the goal. The referee’s assistant looked to have flagged to signal that the ball had crossed the line with referee Jimmy McGrath appearing to signal for the goal. However, as the Waterford United team celebrated, the referee awarded a free kick to Cork City on the edge of the penalty area, citing a pull on McNulty’s jersey as his reasons for his sudden change of mind.
Five minutes from time Blues captain for the day Michael Coady collected two yellow cards in two minutes and was duly sent from the field. And so the game finished 2-1 to the visiting side with a heavily sanded pitch prevented free flowing football.
A solid defensive City display along with an impressive midfield pairing of Morrissey and Duggan is sure to please City boss Tommy Dunne. For the home side, an impressive performance from Gary Keane was one of the highlights while midfielder Keith Quinn could prove vital to the Blues promotion push.
