Cousins aims for top half finish

Following the demise of Sporting Fingal during the week Longford Town manager Tony Cousins thinks clubs have to be realistic when it comes to budgets. He believes when it comes to responsibility the onus shouldn’t only be on the chairman but instead come right the way down to the manager.

“Everyone has to take responsibility. That comes from the chairman right down the board and to the manager. At the end of the day you have a budget and you have to run the club on that. You can’t spend money that you haven’t got. You can’t sign a player and then two weeks later say to him ‘I haven’t got the money.’ Fingal signed players last week and look what happened,” Cousins told ExtraTime.ie.

The Town boss has a set budget for the season which he has to live within it. He knows it’s tough not having much money at his disposable but he’s glad the club are in a healthy position off the field. He said, “There is nobody knocking on our door. The committee have been great with me and what I want and we have worked well together. I have ran things in professional manner and kept things within budget and what the club can afford.”

Moving to matters on the field Cousins is gearing up for another tough First Division campaign. He is hoping his side can move on and finish in the top half of this season after a somewhat disappointing 9th place finish last season. He admitted though, that the division is going to be stronger than last year.

“It’s going to be a very competitive league. I think it’s going to be harder than last year. For us, we need to kick on and we need a top half finish. That’s what we need and what I’m hoping for. We want to get off to a good start and get results against the teams around us, that was our problem last year; dropping points to the teams below us. Hopefully the players will learn from that. There is a nice blend of players there now. I’m hoping for an enjoyable season,” added the Town boss.
