Limerick FC and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) have agreed to enter into mediation to end their legal dispute, the High Court has been informed.

“The Football Association of Ireland today confirmed to the High Court that it and Limerick FC have agreed to enter mediation,” a short FAI statement read. “The FAI regrets that money spent on this course of action will be lost to the sport. What is decided during the mediation process with Limerick FC could have broader ramifications for the funding and development of football at all levels.”

The problem began last May when Limerick FC were refused permission to stage a lucrative friendly in July in Thomand Park against Barcelona.

The request by Limerick was denied by the league citing “third party commercial agreements" had prevented them from allowing the game to go ahead. The FAI said they couldn’t grant such a friendly because of the long term deals they have in place with third party TV and sporting rights companies.

The company was later revealed to be Endemol which prevented the go-ahead for club to arrange friendly matches in venues with a more than 15,000 capacity, therefore preventing the friendly with the Catalan giants.
