Cretaro makes Sligo Rovers Return
Sligo Rovers have confirmed that Raffaele Cretaro has re-joined the club.
Cretaro left the Bit o' Red in early 2010 after two successful spells in The Showgrounds. The 29-year-old enjoyed a tremendous year with Rovers in 2009, scoring 13 league goals and also netting in the FAI Cup and Europa League.
He helped the club reach the FAI Cup final in that campaign and now makes the move back to The Showgrounds after one season with Bohs.
Extratime.ie brought you the news last week that Cretaro was aiming for a return to the Showgrounds and the deal has now be finalised. The 29-year last week said that he wanted to sort contract issues with his current club before he decided on where he will be playing his football next season.
“Obviously they (Sligo) would be the obvious option”, Cretaro said last week. “I've played under Paul Cook before and thoroughly enjoyed it so I'd say going home is my likeliest option.”
Cretaro was a firm fans favourite at The Showgrounds before he left the club ahead of the 2010 season and believes that if he does indeed return, The Bit O' Red can challenge for the title. But he doesn't expect to be greeted with open arms by the Sligo faithful.
“I don't regret leaving Sligo one bit, I've learned a lot and got a lot of experience from my year at Bohs but I'm not expecting to be welcomed back with open arms if I do go back to Sligo. I think next year is going to be very tight. You have Dundalk who have added decent players to their squad and you have Pat's too. I'm sure it will be on Paul Cook's mind to go one step better than last season though and challenge for a title.”
