Waterford United got their pre-season off to a start with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against the Waterford & District League Oscar Traynor Selection in Cappoquin on Wednesday night.

The game marked the first of six pre-season games for Stephen Henderson’s squad. After the game the manager said he was ‘pleased with the run out’ his squad was given.

His side started slowly and and struggled initially and fell behind after 12 minutes. Stephen Grant was taken down in the penalty area by Blues skipper Kevin Murray and Kevin Roche fired the resulting penalty past 18-year-old keeper Josh Byrne in the Waterford United goal.

Kevin Walsh doubled the junior league’s lead when powered a header past Kevin Burns at the near post just after the break.

The Blues new-look midfield began to gain the upper hand as the game wore on and pulled a goal back through striker Paul Murphy. Gary Keane was taken down in the penalty area and penalty number two was awarded for Murphy to half the deficit.

Keane then got on the score-sheet himself shortly afterwards. David Breen, beginning his third spell with the club, flicked a Paul Murphy corner toward goal and Keane was on hand to fire home after Breen’s header was blocked.

Stephen Henderson’s side now make the trek southwest to Bandon, in west Cork, to kick off host club Bandon AFC’s 40th anniversary celebrations on Saturday February 5th at 2pm.
