Coleman to stay at Goodison until 2015
Seamus Coleman has signed a new four-and-a-half year contract with Everton and the 22-year-old from Killybegs says he wants to celebrate his new deal by helping the Toffees to a win against West Ham on Saturday.
Coleman has been in sensational form this season, excelling in his new role on the right side of the Everton midfield, with five goals already to his name this season.
As his star continues to rise, with an Irish international debut now almost a certainty next month, potential suitors of the modest former Sligo Rovers player - who signed for Everton in January 2009 - have been warned off by David Moyes, who has handed the player an improved contract.
Coleman only signed a new contract with Everton in May having impressed on a loan spell at Blackpool, but such has been his form this season that Moyes was keen to pin him down at Goodison Park.
“I'm over the moon to sign the contract, my aim was to keep impressing after every contract and this new one proves that I've been doing well,” Coleman said.
“I just want to keep going now. When I came over first it was a two-year contract and I treated it as a trial. “I got a new one whilst I was at Blackpool, and to get another one so quickly was a surprise because that's three in a short space of time.”
Coleman has now agreed to extend his stay on Merseyside until at least 2015, with Blues fans delighted with the news yesterday, when another young player - Victor Anichebe - also signed a four-and-a-half year deal.
He scored in Everton’s 1-1 draw at Upton Park over the Christmas period and would love to repeat the feat Saturday when they host the Hammers at Goodison.
“The Premier League this season is so tight and everyone is beating everyone apart from United at the top,” continued Coleman.
“You can't take anything for granted and West Ham aren't going so well and they are going to be fighting for it but we need the points at Goodison.”
The Killybegs man says he will continue to put in the maximum amount of effort, a trait that has served him well.
“When I go out on the pitch I get my head down and I have a go,” he said. “Even if it's not going well for me on the ball, I'll keep running around and giving it 100 per cent and the fans appreciate that.”
Irish legend John Giles was in Donegal on Wednesday evening to launch his ‘Walk of Dreams’ project and the former midfielder and manager has tipped Coleman for the top. “He's done remarkably well and he's a terrific lad,” said Giles.
“He started off at full-back, but he's playing now on the right side of midfield. He has very good technique, he carries the ball well and he can actually beat players, which you don't see much of in the Premiership these days.
“He can just get better and better. He is very composed and has plenty of confidence in himself. I think with the more experience he gets I'd like to see him just express himself even more and have a little bit of arrogance.”
