City retain Spillane for 2011
Cork City have retained young central defender Kalen Spillane’s services for 2011, becoming the 12th player to sign on with the club for the new season.
Spillane made his senior debut towards the end of last season when City were plagued by injuries, and after coming through the youth ranks, he is being heralded as a future regular in the senior squad.
“Kalen has come through the youth set-up at the club and has been seen as a player with plenty of potential for the last couple of years,” City manager Tommy Dunne said after confirming the signing today.
“Had it not been for the fact that we could not use players from the youth teams in the first half of last season, he may well have featured more, and then he picked up an injury which kept him out until near the end of the season.”
“He came into the side for the last few games of last season and did well. He still has a bit of work to do to get into the frame, but he has a good physical presence and a good left foot, and I hope that he can push on and fulfil the potential he undoubtedly possesses.”
Meanwhile, Spillane added: “I’m delighted to have signed for next season. I enjoyed the opportunity I got at the end of last season. My aim now is to get myself in good shape, try to stay clear of injuries and fight for a regular place in the team.”
