Clubs announce POTY awards

With the season having come to a close, Supporters clubs around the country have been announcing the winners of their Player of the Year awards. Bray Wanderers, Finn Harps, Waterford United, St. Patrick’s Athletic, Longford Town and Shelbourne have announced their winners.

The Bray Wanderers Supporters Club Player of the Year Awards Night held at the Glenview Hotel on Saturday night. The Senior Player of the Year Award went to striker Jake Kelly who scored the goal that took the final game of the season to extra time and eventually penalties.

The Young Player of the Year Award went to Chris Shields who scored the O.G with just two minutes remaining in that final game and then set-up the equaliser for Jake Kelly and went on to score the winning penalty that secured Bray's status in the Premier Division.

For the second year in a row, Finn Harps Captain Packie Mailey has been named as the club's Player of the Year. The presentation was made at a function in Ballybofey on Saturday night last. Fellow defender, James Doherty, picked up the award for Young Player of the Year.

Waterford United's annual End of Season awards were handed out last week also, and the top honour of Player of the Year, as voted for by Blues Supporters Club members, went to the Abbeyside hitman Willie John Kiely, whose exceptional goals tally and general front line play earned him the nod ahead of strong challenges from Kevin Murray, John Kearney and Kevin Burns. John Kearney’s superb 20-yard strike to beat Wexford Youths in August took the Goal of the Season accolade.

St Patrick’s Athletic Supporters Club held their Player of the Year night at the Lucan Spa Hotel. Defender Conor Kenna was voted the supporters’ Player of the year while Sheffield United-bound David McAllister was voted Young Player of the Year.

Michael Lee collected the Longford Town Player of the Year award. The Goal of the Season was won by Peter Hynes for his outstanding stunning strike against Finn Harps in Flancare.

The Shelbourne FC 'Player of the Year went to David Cassidy, and he also picked up the Ollie Byrne Perpetual Trophy for the Shelbourne 'Players' Player of the Year'.
