Delaney pays Mervue United visit
FAI CEO John Delaney was a welcome visitor to the club’s ground at Fahy’s Field on Friday evening along Airtricity league chairman and Galway native Eamon Naughton.
He was in Galway for the Galway Bay FM Sports Star awards in the Radisson Hotel but made time to drop into Fahy’s Field to meet with members of the club’s board about the club’s current development plans for the facilities at the club’s grounds as they try to return home to Mervue from the 2011 League of Ireland season.
Mr. Delaney firstly though went and met with the club’s Roots Academy coaches who were hard at training on the all weather pitch and the three cages with young players from age 6 to 10 years of age.
The FAI’s top man made sure to speak with everyone of the coaches involved in each of the session and congratulated them “on the fantastic work they were doing at grassroots level and hoped the club would produce many more players like Greg Cunningham for the Irish national team”. When asked what he thought of Greg’s performance against Norway on Wednesday night he replied “I thought he was man of the match as he played very well”.
Following his tour of the club facilities and clubhouse he was then shown the club’s current plans for the improved facilities at Fahy’s Field. The club are currently applying for permission to transfer their League of Ireland games for the 2011 season from Terryland Park back home to Fahy’s Field.
Following a number of visits during the past week by officials from the FAI to the club’s grounds at Fahy’s Field, the club is now very hopeful of a successful outcome to their bid to hold their homes games in Mervue for the new Airtricity First Division season next March.
