Bray Wanderers retain Premier Status
Bray Wanderers completed their amazing end of season u-turn to incredibly survive the drop and preserve their Premier Division status for the 2011 season. The game looked like finishing scoreless after extratime until two late goals left it 1-1 and into penalties. The penalty shootout finished 7-6 to Bray to deny Monaghan promotion who remain in the First Division.
Rainy and windy conditions made it very difficult and neither side looked to be able to break the deadlock coming up to the 120 minute mark. But two minutes before full time Darragh Hanaphy’s effort came crashing back off the post, and ball eventually fell to Don Tierney and his shot was deflected off Chris Shields into the back of the net. That goal looked to be the winner but for Bray’s Jake Kelly to level two minutes into stoppage time from close range after Sava couldnt hold onto Shield's header across the goal..
And so we went into a penalty shootout. Berminghan and Hughes scored Mons first two while Dempsey and Kelly kept the scores tied. Gartland scored for Monaghan but Shaw then missed for Bray to leave Mons 3-2 in front. Clancy and Massey both scored to make it 4-3. Alan Byrne had the chance to win it for Monaghan but missed and allowed Danny O’Connor to level at 4-4 after five peno’s each.
Tierney and McCrossan scored for Monaghan and Doyle and O’Neill levelled for Monaghan. Paul Whelan then stepped up but missed allowing Chris Shields, the OG scorer, to score and keep Bray Wanderers in the Premier Division.
