Peter Cherrie has on Friday afternoon agreed a new one-year deal with Dundalk and will spend his second full season at Oriel Park in 2011, stating that his “heart is here”. The goalkeeper has been a star performer for the Lilywhites since joining in the 2009 July transfer window and he has admitted his happiness at signing for another year. He also said he doubts he will ever play for another club in Ireland, with settling in the local area over the past 12 months helping his decision to stay.

“I’m just glad it’s over and done with,” Cherrie exclusively told dundalkfc.com moments after putting pen to paper. “We cut it quite tight doing it on the last day of the season but it’s good to get it done and dusted for another year. I’ll just move on now and look forward to next season. I’ve always said that I want to play for Dundalk. I don’t think I’d ever play for another club in Ireland – I told the Gaffer that. My heart is here. I have had calls from other clubs but no offers, just people saying that they were interested, that’s as far as it went.

“I’m very happy here in Ireland,” he added. “I have my home and girlfriend here so I’m very happy and I don’t fancy moving anywhere else.” Cherrie also admitted that Daniel Kearns, Ross Gaynor, Stephen Maher, Simon Madden and Dean Bennett re-signing for the club made his decision to stay easier. “I suppose it did because last year I was the only one signed until nearly January,” he said. “To see the five boys signed is pleasing. It brings a bit of stability and we can look forward to next season. Hopefully we can push on. Hopefully a couple of the other guys put pen to paper and hopefully we can push higher up the table next year. It’s massive to have continuity because you know each other inside out; going into a new season already knowing the players is a massive help.”
