O’Halloran and McNulty agree City deals
Cork City have today announced that two of its current squad have agreed deals to remain at the club through to the end of the 2011 League of Ireland season. Goalkeeper Mark McNulty and defender Greg O’Halloran have both agreed deals with the Munster club.
Versatile defender O’Halloran has made 27 league appearances for the club this season. “I really enjoyed this season and I am delighted to be staying at the club. Our aim next season will be promotion, and I hope to play my part in that. The club is being well run and I can see no reason why I would have wanted to leave”, he told CorkCityFC.net.
Manager Tommy Dunne was equally delighted with the deal, though has also announced O’Halloran will not be continuing in his player/coach role next season. “Greg is an experienced player, and has been one of our better players this season. I am glad that he has committed to the club. Greg has made a significant contribution this season, on and off the pitch, but my preference is for him to focus on playing next season. We will be announcing a new assistant manager over the close-season.”
McNulty, 30, has been ever-present in the league this season for the club, and has set his sights on promotion is the target for next season: “I’m delighted to have signed back with the club for next season. I enjoyed this year, even though we didn’t get promoted and didn’t give the fans something to shout about over the last few games of the season, especially last Friday. My hope now is that we bring in a couple of new players to strengthen the squad, as I believe we should be aiming to win the division next season, and I think that belief is shared by everyone at the club”, he told CorkCityFC.net.
City boss Tommy Dunne said: “I think everyone can see that Mark has improved over the course of the season, and that is probably an indication that he had not played enough games over the years that he was with the club. I know Mark wants to play for the club and wants to play his part in getting the club promoted back to the Premier Division and am pleased that he has signed.”
Manager Tommy Dunne also told CorkCityFC.net that he expects further similar announcements over the coming days. “We are in discussions with the players currently at the club who we want to keep here for next season, and I do expect more players to sign over the next week or two. With the last game of the season coming up on Saturday, we can then also turn our attentions to players currently at other clubs who we would like to sign.”
“Some of the negotiations have been tough. All clubs now need to live within their means, and things have changed a lot for the players over the last year or so. That reality is sometimes tough for people, but this year has proven that this club is conducting its business properly and honouring all of its commitments. I am confident that players will sign for the club in the knowledge that they will be treated well and that things are being done properly here.”
