Dundalk see red at Tomney
In the aftermath of Dundalks 2-0 defeat by Sporting Fingal a limping and clearly frustrated Wayne Hatswell spoke exclusively to Extratime.ie.
Wayne expressed his disappointment at Dundalk again looking good, creating chances but ending up on the wrong end of the score line. “Disappointing, but they’re a good side, they’ve got some good players. We didn’t punish them enough tonight, it’s probably just summed our season up in a nutshell, we play quite well then we get hit with a sucker punch in a game and it always seems to be something that hurts us. We have to get better at it and we have to recognise that you don’t get chances aplenty and you have to take them when they come along, goals change games. We knew they were a threat from set pieces, it’s not the first ball (Crowes header) that’s beat us it’s the second one (Williams finish), they ain’t done nothing and they’re 1-0 up. Everyone gets their heads down a little bit and it took us a while to get the momentum going again. We’re disappointed, the second goal was the killer it was a great strike from him but they’ve got players who can do that to hurt teams.”
Referee Derek Tomney produced two straight red cards in the match but the Swindon native was at a loss to explain his decision regarding Ross Gaynor “He’s not left the floor has he? I don’t understand, I don’t think you can tackle in this league full stop. The referees whether they’ve played the game or what I don’t know, you’re not allowed to tackle. If you slow that down in slow motion its probably split second timing that’s he’s tried to tackle the fellow with (Conan Byrne) he’s going forwards (Gaynor) and he’s (Byrne) going the other direction so if he doesn’t get the ball it’s obviously going to look bad. He hasn’t left the floor I just don’t understand how that is a red card, if he’s left the floor which is the rules of the game, deemed in a dangerous manner so I think you just aren’t allowed to tackle. What’s he supposed to do? Because he’s missed the ball he’s supposed to stop in mid air? It’s humanly impossible.”
The Lilywhites assistant manager believes that the physical aspect of football is being blown out of the game. “I try and tell the referees whilst I’m out there that it’s a man’s game, let men be men and play the game as it should be. You’ve got to be competitive, you look at the premier league or most football nowadays and its competitive, the referees are killing the game they don’t realise it, it’s a man’s game, you’ve got to get on with it and there’s got to be tackles, that’s the way that everybody wants to play the game.”
Dundalk face Bohemians in the season finale and he is hoping they finish positively. “They (Bohemians) need Bray to do them a favour, they don’t need any help off us and that’s not a good position to be in for them. It was in their hands and they’ve blown it but we’ve got to go there and we want to finish the season on a high and go out on a win and get over 50 points which will be nice for us. We’ll be missing Ross (Gaynor) and he’ll be a big miss for us but we’ll have Garry Breen back and hopefully Sean Kelly after illness we can start getting a few heads together for training next week.”
Dundalk are busy trying to tie down their squad for next season we asked how it was going. “We’re still in negotiations at the moment with the majority of the team now we won’t over commit and obviously we don’t want to blow the budget early doors we want a bit of a nucleus of a side to work with for next season and hopefully we can bring in a couple of bargains. It’s obviously going to be tough on the budget we have when we are competing against teams like Fingal who have triple our budget.”
So Dundalk will finish the season at Bohemians in what will be a very important fixture for their opponents.
