French happy with Mervue derby win
Following last night’s 2-1 win in the Galway derby over Salthill Devon, Mervue United manager Tom French confirmed he was over the moon with the result having watched his side move four points clear of the bottom club.
French expressed his delight at his side’s second half performance coming from a goal down at the break to collect all three valuable points “I thought we deserved the win in the end having worked hard all over the pitch and once Enda Curran scored we had enough chances to kill off the game but didn’t convert any of them”
Having lost experienced striker Dave Goldbey so early he thought his young replacement Curran did well on his introduction “ Enda didn’t let us down and he held the ball up well for us and took his goal well, while Rory Gaffney also done well and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet.
On Salthill’s controversial first goal French was adamant that Victor Collins was at least two or three yards offside “From where I was he looked offside but the assistant didn’t agree and said James Casserely had played him onside but that’s football you just have to get on with it which we did and luckily it didn’t cost us in the end”.
“I thought it was a good game as both sides tried to get the ball on the ground and play it and the referee handled the game very well with only one booking in the game, compared to at least ten in the game in Drom.
“It’s not over yet though as they have four games and twelve points to play for and we have three games and nine points to play for so we are looking forward to next’s week trip to Shelbourne and hopefully take something from that game.
Mervue have Shelbourne (away), Monaghan (home) and a final away game against Finn Harps left, while Salthill have Monaghan at home next Monday night in their game in hand and further games against Derry (home), Cork City (away) and a final home game with Longford Town.
