Blues boss sets sight on Monaghan
First Division promotion chasers Monaghan United and Waterford United meet this Friday evening in a vital clash that could potentially have a huge bearing on who finishes in the top three spots. Having watched his side power past Limerick 3-0 last weekend, Waterford United manager Stephen Henderson feels his side have a good shot at beating the current league leaders.
“We’re well capable of beating Monaghan”, Henderson told Extratime, “once the lads believe that then we’ll give a good account of ourselves. We’ll train well for it, if we beat them we’ll go ahead of them even though they have a game in hand. Psychologically that’ll be a big boost for us to go and beat Monaghan.
The performance on the night put to bed any nerves after coming through a sticky patch mid season. Henderson was quick to praise his side on the night and particularly the quality of the goals.
“It was a great performance, both attacking-wise and defensively. They [Limerick] have very quick players up front and [Stephen] O’Flynn is a handful for most teams. We had to get it right defensively right and we did that.”
“Our back four, our midfield and our front two defended very well. They when we got the ball out wide, we started to dominate the game. We got a lot of quality crosses into the box and scored three quality goals. I thought Willie [John Kiely]’s goal was tremendous, and Liam’s ones too, especially the last one.”
At the beginning of the season, the Waterford boss wanted other players to contribute to the scoring charts rather than being dependent on his strikers and following the 6-1 win the previous weekend, he was very happy with his team.
“Timmy [Purcell] scored, Kevin Murray scored, John Kearney scored and Willie with his hat-trick. Players are starting to step up to the plate now and at a crucial time in the season. We were very professional when we didn’t have the ball and very good when we did have it. Tonight we were so professional and I’m so proud of them.”
