The Republic of Ireland Under-17 girls collected a well earned three points on Thursday night at the 2010 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago. A lone strike from Siobhán Killeen was enough to see off the challenge of a strong Canada side.

Having lost 2-1 to Brazil on Monday, they needed a win to be in with a chance of progressing further in the competition. Noel King kept faith with the starting 11 which narrowly lost to Brazil on Monday and they repaid his faith.

Ireland had the best of the opening match as Jennifer Byrne had an early chance cleared off the line. Just before half time Canada almost grabbed an equaliser as Caroline Beaulne broke through the Irish midfield but her powerful shot went just left of Moloney’s post. Haisha Cantave had a great chance to equalise afterwards but for a Megan Campbell clearance off the line.

The Irish goal arrived with 15 minutes remaining and it continued with the standards seen in their previous match. Siobhán Killeen collected the ball outside the Canadian penalty area from Stacie Donnelly, held off the defender and fired a superb strike up and above the dive of the keeper into the top right corner much to the delight of manager Noel King and the travelling Irish supporters. Alexandra Courtnall broke through the Irish defence with five minutes remaining but Grace Maloney was quickly out of her goal and produced a magnificent reflex save to ensure the three points.

The Rep. of Ireland girls face Ghana on Monday in their final group game.
