Waterford United have announced that striker David Grincell has left the club.

Grincell, 22, has not featured regularly for Stephen Henderson’s side this season and the management team have decided he was surplus to requirements at the club.

Following a hot scoring streak in August 2008, scoring five goals in just four games, The Blues signed Grincell to a 2 year deal to keep him at the club until then end of the current 2010 season.

Grincell originally signed for the Blues after a superb showing in the 2006 Munster Youths Cup Final for local side Tramore. He then spent time on loan at Kilkenny City to gain senior experience in 2007.

On his Blues return, he mainly featured as a substitute before taking his chance when called upon. One occasion remembered by all Blues fans present was a 35 yard volley to score against Longford. Further double strikes against Fingal and Limerick 37 strengthened his reputation as one of the most exciting young players in the League of Ireland.

His first team chances were few and far between as the form of Willie John Kiely and Graham Cummins kept the Kilkenny-born striker on the bench for a lot of the 2009 season. Grincell suffered a double fracture of the wrist in the Blues cup match against Crumlin United in August which ruled the striker out for much of the remainder of the season.

A club statement read:

“Following discussions with the team management this week, it has been agreed that striker David Grincell is to be released from today.

Waterford United wish to thank David for his outstanding contribution to the Blues cause over the past several seasons, and wish him every success in the future.”
