Tardelli Announces Squad For Euro Double Header
Marco Tardelli today announced the 25-man Republic of Ireland squad for the opening two Group B European Championship qualification games against Armenia and Andorra.
There were no major surprises, although the inclusion of Preston North End winger Keith Treacy was perhaps not widely predicted. The former Blackburn youngster only received his first cap as a second-half substitute against Argentina last time out.
One minor surprise perhaps was the naming of only three strikers. Kevin Doyle returns from injury, while Reading starlet Shane Long and captain Robbie Keane complete the attacking triumvirate.
The Republic of Ireland take on Armenia in Yerevan on Friday August 20th before playing the first competitive game at the new Aviva stadium against Andorra on September 7th.
The squad in full: Goalkeepers: Shay Given (Manchester City), Keiren Westwood (Coventry City), Joe Murphy (Scunthorpe United) Defenders: John O’ Shea (Manchester United), Richard Dunne (Aston Villa), Sean St. Ledger (Preston North End), Greg Cunningham (Manchester City), Kevin Foley (Wolves), Stephen Kelly (Fulham), Paul McShane (Hull City), Darren O’ Dea (Ipswich Town), Kevin Kilbane (Hull City) Midfielders: Keith Andrews (Blackburn Rovers), Glenn Whelan (Stoke City), Darron Gibson (Manchester United), Paul Green (Derby County), Liam Lawrence (Stoke City), Aiden McGeady (Spartak Moscow), Andy Keogh (Wolves), Damien Duff (Fulham), Keith Fahey (Birmingham City), Keith Treacy (Preston North End) Strikers: Robbie Keane (Tottenham Hotspur), Kevin Doyle (Wolves), Shane Long (Reading)
