Fantasy Football Week 1 Summary

The Extratime.ie Fantasy Football league kicked off on Saturday with the start of the English Premier League 2010/11 and I was very confident that I’d be riding high with my cunning ploy to pump money into the defence and midfield. Armed with the confidence of winning one of the leagues I entered last year, I was sure Week 1 would be mine. Oh yes!

Things didn’t go quite to plan. I lurk an abysmal joint 154th out of currently 174 players. My only comfort lies in the knowledge that I know a couple of people below me that I meet on a daily basis.

Perhaps putting fate in Liverpool was a step too far as Joe Cole saw red and Jose Reina felt the need to give Arsenal a dig out by throwing the ball into his own net. Their combined acts of self implosion resulted in five valuable points being deducted.

But enough about my failings, it’s all about Aaron Hanlon and his Rovers FC. If any doubt over which Rovers he dreams of managing, one look at the green and white hooped jersey and all doubts evaporate. Yes, just like his Shamrock Rovers in the Airtricity Premier, he tops the league. Clearly aware that a top quality striker can make all the difference, his team is riding high on the back of Didier Yves Drogba Tébily. Three goals from him, coupled with strong midfield and defensive displays sees him leading the charge on 82 points.

Close on his trail is Kevin Doyle’s Shels. Ironically it is his namesake that undid his dreams of top place. Due to Wolves Doyle failing to make an appearance, Kevin was rewarded with an automatic sub. Fellow Irishman Stephen Carr launched into action, with a yellow card, concession of two and to top it off, scoring an own goal. The result being -2 points. Kevin is on 79 points.

Third place sees Aidan Doyle’s Ledge-bag’s Eleven. He may not be top, his team may be Ledge-bags but he wins the Best Worst kit as his team don a mustard jersey with brown sleeves, dark blue shorts with black trim and a pair of lime green and orange socks. Luckily Chelsea didn’t look as bad with a Malouda/Drogba double act earning him 47 of his 78 point total.

So Gameweek One ends and so begins the long road to the glory of being crowned Extratime.ie Fantasy Football Champions. If you feel like throwing your hat in the ring, our League code is 266397-71108. My subs have been made and I have a feeling Week 2 will be mine... Oh yes!
