FAI Ford Cup Third Round Draw

Credit:

The draw for the Third Round of the FAI Ford Cup took place in Ballsbridge, Dublin on Monday evening, with just one all-Premier Division clash emerging from the sixteen ties, which were drawn by the Republic of Ireland management team of Giovanni Trapattoni and Marco Tardelli.

Once again, it will be the battle of the Rovers which takes centre stage, as Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers meet at Tolka Park. The pair also met at this stage of the competition last year, with Sligo narrowly edging out their opponents by 3-2. However, the date for the game has yet to be announced, as the Hoops’ landlords, Shelbourne, have also been drawn at home.

Indeed, that tie represents the other standout fixture in the draw, as the Reds play host to First Division title rivals, Dundalk. The Lilywhites have been given a quick opportunity to gain revenge on Dermot Keely’s men, after suffering just their second defeat at Oriel Park in 34 league outings against Shels last Thursday night.

Other interesting matches include Drogheda United’s trip to Cork junior club, Douglas Hall, who thrashed Cobh Ramblers 4-1 in this round twelve months ago. Elsewhere, Bohemians will entertain Drogheda Town, who are managed by ex-Gypsies hero Terry Eviston, while Liffeys Pearse have been handed a plum tie as they travel to the Brandywell to take on Derry City.

The ties will take place on the weekend ending Sunday 8 June. Times and dates for all sixteen games should be confirmed in the coming days, with at least one of the Tolka Park meetings expected to be shown live on television.
