Gormley delights in victory over Drogs

A very pragmatic Eddie Gormley spoke to Extratime.ie following his side’s somewhat surprising win over Drogheda United on Friday night at Hunky Dorys Park.

The Bray Wanderers manager admitted that anything but a win would have realistically spelled the end for his side’s Premier Division survival hopes.

“It was a badly needed three points,” said Gormley

“It would have been near on impossible to catch Drogheda and it gives us a massive boost going into the next few games,” he added.

The gap between Bray and Drogheda has now been reduced to eight points and Gormley feels his side are still capable of leapfrogging the Boynesiders.

“I think it is possible. We have a back match to come. If we could get even three points out of that, make the gap five and we still have Drogheda to come to our place. It will be an interesting few weeks if we can cut the gap to five or even three points over the coming weeks. It will be a nice run in for the season and be a scrap between the two of us.”

Despite signing eight new players it was two of the old guard who gave Bray the win with Jake Kelly and John Mulroy getting their names of the scoresheet and Gormley believes that with all the new additions his side are in a more competitive state.

“Yeah we have brought it maybe five or six players and that’s no reflection on the players we have had before the transfer window. We needed a bit of experience with more competition and that’s what we have now so that puts us in good stead after the rest of the season.”

Despite propping up the table and only winning twice this season, the other win coming away to Dundalk, Gormley is claims his side continue to retain a high level of confidence and is surprised at their position in the league.

“To be fair to the players they have never lacked any confidence. It’s a surprising position that we are in, losing so many games on the bounce. You have to say the one thing about them is that they are one of the most honest bunch of players in the league.”

“They have picked themselves up and given everything that they have. I am proud of them and now that we have a bit more experience and competition it can only be good for us and give us a better chance of surviving in the league,” he added.
