Henderson disappointed with Derry deficit

After moving back into second position in the First Division on Friday night, albeit on goal difference, Waterford Utd manager Stephen Henderson admitted that although his side are in an ideal position he’s disappointed to be so far behind leaders Derry City.

The Blues recorded their first win of the season over Longford Town, beating the Midlanders 2-0 at the RSC. 12 points separate the top 2 and Henderson said the main priority for Waterford now is to try and pick up as many points available. “We are second and it is into the second half of the season,” he told extratime.ie. “We wouldn’t have liked to have been this far behind Derry but the fact is we are so we have to deal with it. We have to mind ourselves, try and win as many games as possible and see where it takes us.”

With Derry so far infront it’s going to be an interesting battle to see who can claim the two play-off positions. Monaghan Utd manager Mick Cooke has been critical of the way the promotion/relegation play- off was structured. The Blues manager isn’t in agreeance with his fellow manager. He said, “Mick said that when he got himself into the play-off spot. We all say that when we are there. But we all know the rules when we start. We were trying to have a go at this league, we weren’t expecting Derry to be down here and they are a fine side.”

Although Longford did cause them a good few problems on Friday night Henderson believes his side thoroughly deserved the win. “We deserved our win,” he said. “It was a good game. They are a good side, a strong one and Tony (Cousins) has them well organised. We had to take the chances from the set pieces. Anytime we have played them we haven’t had our back four and I was delighted to have them together because Longford are a threat up front. Three points were the main thing and it was a clean sheet.”

He went on to say, “We have lost just one of our last six matches. People were saying we were on a bad run; it’s all about perception.”
