Cousins rues missed chances

Despite losing 2-0 on Friday night away to Waterford Utd, Longford Town manager Tony Cousins was pleased with his side’s performance. The one thing that disappointed Cousins though was the amount of goal chances the Town squandered.

Several times the Town found themselves in ideal positions to take a shot at goal but poor finishing and hesitancy let them down. It was something that frustrated the Town boss. “We started well and created the best chance in the opening minutes but for some reason we won’t shoot. In an awful lot of matches recently we are 12 yards out and we won’t shoot. Second half against Waterford it was the same. There have been a few instances where we have tried to walk the ball in whereas if you get the chance just take it,” he told extratime.ie.

Unlike previous defeats this season the Town’s performance couldn’t be questioned; even when they went 2-0 down they kept their composure and continued to play football. Cousins was pleased with his side’s overall performance. “I’ve been shattered after other games. We created enough chances to get something out of it but gave away a terrible goal and a harsh peno. Overall we could’ve easily come away with a draw. We kept going after we went 2-0 down so I will take the positives out of it. We came to the RSC and had plenty of chances and that’s the positives,” he admitted.

After going 1-0 down the Town created chances to get back into the game but then Waterford doubled their advantage from the penalty spot after referee Sean Grant adjudged that Aidan Roche handled the ball. Cousins wasn’t happy with the decision. “I thought the peno was very harsh. The player was sliding along the ground and if the ref legislates that it hit his hand it couldn’t be deliberate if he was on the ground. That really killed the game,” he said.

Town have been hit with a spate of injuries to key players of late. Several players who would have been in contention for starting positions were missing for Friday night’s game. According to Cousins it’s going to be a few more weeks until the majority of them will be back in the squad. “Don Cowan done his hamstring against Malahide in a friendly and is gone for 2wks. Craig Mooney is out for another 2-3 weeks. It’ll be another 3 weeks before we have Dave Freeman back. Derek Glynn could be back in another week while Philip Byrne is 2 weeks away from returning. We are missing good intelligent players.”
