Kierans - We deserved the win

A visibly delighted Darius Kierans spoke to the waiting media after Drogheda United’s surprise win over Fingal.

“I thought we deserved it, we passed the ball well and we created the better chances,” said the Drogheda assistant manager.

Kierans spoke of the effort put in by his side, “The work rate was very good, Peter McMahon is a good addition to the squad, he was with us as a schoolboy and I’m delighted to have him back.”

But the Drogheda director of football isn’t getting to ahead of himself after the result. “We still have a lot of work to do and we aren’t going to get carried away with the three points.”

Having seen Fingal reduced to ten men before the break Kierans’ side was then down a man with Eoghan Osborne having received his marching orders and while Kierans says he could have tried to defend his position he felt the game was still there for the taking.

“The easy thing to do when you go down to ten men is to go 4-4-1, but we stayed 4-3-2 and went for it and it paid off. And even at the end when they were chasing to the game we still had the better chances.”

But in fairness to Fingal they have a big match on Thursday and they were without a few key players and that’s fair enough to Liam because there is a lot of prize money at stake and I hope they can get through it and wish them best of luck.

However Kierans did feel the second yellow card may not have been warranted but remained magnanimous in his comments on the ref.

“Yeah I thought it was harsh because the referee didn’t award a free kick so I’ve asked Eoghan did he say anything to the ref and he said no.

“To be fair it was a difficult game to ref and he did a good job, it was the type of match where there were tackles going in and more could have easily went.”
