Gallagher hopes to boost numbers

Finn Harps manager James Gallagher hopes to add to his playing squad ahead of next Friday’s trip to Turner’s Cross to take on Cork City Foras Co-op.

Harps are awaiting international clearance on former goalkeeper Gavin Cullen, Tony Shields, who skippered the side in 2007 and 2008, and Shane O’Connor, while Keith Cowan has also signed for the club this week.

“Keith has already signed and he’ll be pushing to get into the squad for next week,” Gallagher said. “As for Tony and Gavin, we are awaiting international clearance for them. For some reason it never came though so somebody is not doing their job. It wasn’t on our behalf, but hopefully they will be available for Cork and Shane should be available as we’re awaiting his clearance as he played with a club in Holland.”

Gallagher was speaking after his side’s 1-1 home draw with Waterford United, where he kept goal and saw Davitt Walsh put the home team in front before Willie John Kiely’s second half equaliser made for a point apiece.

“It was hard fought,” he said. “We’ve decided with our mixed bag of results that we were letting ourselves down. It was only basic things like not winning your own battles or showing that bit if hunger and desire. It was there last week and it was there tonight. We’ve four points from the last two games. It wasn’t pretty but when you’re picking up points you’ll not worry too much. We needed to dig deep and give everything we have.

“Confidence isn’t quite right at the minute, but we’re getting there. Waterford put us under pressure and we were quite lucky at the times. We were clinical in our own goal and that’s something that we’ve lacked. Davitt probably needed a goal and I was pleased for him and we’ll take that bit of luck. In the second half we weren’t really under that much pressure but you can’t really begrudge Waterford a point at the end of the day.”
