Following Daryl Murphy’s transfer from Sunderland to Celtic on Friday afternoon, Waterford United have confirmed that that they will receive a small windfall from the transfer. The club have confirmed to Extratime that they will receive “a very small percentage” of the transfer fee.

Waterford-native Murphy signed for Sunderland from The Blues in 2005 and went on to score 14 goals, including the goal that secured Sunderland’s Premier League status against Middlesbrough in 2008. Murphy found himself down the pecking order and had loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town, where he scored six goals in 18 games for Roy Keane’s side.

“The money will go to help the running of the club for the remainder of the current season and pay off some of the debts that that the current board inherited”, the club told Extratime.

Murphy himself has admitted he is ‘really pleased’ that his former side will benefit from his move. "The club has been brilliant for me ever since I came back from Luton. I had three fantastic years there and it's been a long time coming this move away from Sunderland and I'm sure they will be glad of it", Murphy told Beat 102103.
