Shane Barrett signs for Cork City

Cork City have announced the signing of Shane Barrett from Sporting Fingal.

The 28 year old, who can play up front or on the wing, started his career at Wolves and had an extremely successful spell with Longford Town, winning two FAI Cups and one League Cup, before signing for Drogheda United in 2006. Barrett won a league title and two Setanta Cups whilst at United Park, before signing for Sporting Fingal at the start of this season.

Speaking to CorkCityFC.net prior to training with the club for the first time, Barrett said: “I’m delighted to have signed for the club and I hope that my time at the club will be a successful one. I’ve been very impressed with the set-up at the club and this is an opportunity for me to kick start my career again.

“I worked under Paul Doolin at Drogheda and Tommy helped out on a couple of occasions when we were involved in European matches, so while I haven’t worked directly with Tommy, I know he has an excellent reputation and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Commenting on the signing, City boss Tommy Dunne said: “While we have a number of options up front, I think we have been lacking a bit of experience in that area, so I believe Shane is a good addition to the squad. When I became aware that he was available I spoke to him, and he was very keen to come down here. He’s coming to us from a full time set-up, so he is fit and he was fighting for a place in the Sporting Fingal team, but he is very keen to play, so I l believe that is a very positive sign.”

“He is keen to get his career back on track after suffering a couple of injuries, and we are keen to get our season back on track, so I hope that both Shane and ourselves will benefit from this move.”
