Kierans focused on task at hand

Weeks after the resignation of Alan Mathews Drogheda United look to be searching for a new manager after the Independent Club Licensing Committee has ruled that recent appointment Darius Kierans does not have the relevant qualifications to manage the first team.

Since being appointed as interim manager, before being appointed as full time manager, Kierans has remained unbeaten in league competition and when contacted by Extratime the Drogheda native was more interested in talking about Friday’s game as opposed to any off-field issues.

“To be honest I’m not interested in commenting on the situation at the moment, we have a big game on Friday night and I’d rather focus on that. This is the most important thing at the moment and obviously once the game is over I will sit down with the board and we can discuss where we go from here,” added Kierans.

Kierans became the youngest manager in the league upon his appointment only turning 31 a few weeks ago, however his short stint as manager was quickly dogged with questions about his qualifications.

A statement released by the Independent Club Licensing Committee stated that Drogheda have until the 14th of July to appoint a new manager or face a possible expulsion from the league.

In the statement the qualifications needed were outlined as followed:

1: Hold a valid ‘UEFA Pro-licence’ or any valid foreign coaching diploma, which is equivalent to this one and acknowledged by UEFA as such.

2: Hold at least a valid ‘UEFA A-licence’ or any valid foreign coaching diploma, which is equivalent to this one and acknowledged by UEFA as such.

3: Hold a ‘recognition of competence’ issued by the FAI Technical Department if this person already has a minimum of five years practical experience as first team manager of any top or 2nd division club of a UEFA member association. Where professional football is played below the top two divisions also the further division may be taken into account. Take note that as from UEFA season 2009/10, no new ‘recognition of competence’ will be issued.

Whether or not Drogheda can successfully appeal the decision remains unknown but nothing will be decided upon until after Fridays clash.
